The Police Benevolent & Protective Association of Illinois was founded in 1936 and is one of the largest police associations of the state. The PB&PA is comprised of full-time and retired sworn police officers in 189 local units, including those of Unit #5 (Springfield).

On behalf of its members, PB&PA of Illinois provides lobbyist activities, scholarship opportunities for members' children, youth programs, and various other activities and tournaments.

The Association is a member of the National Association of Police Organizations, a coalition of police unions and associations from across the United States.
